HOMEBUILDING

Sustainability in Affordable Homebuilding

2 Minute Read

All new Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco homes are built with sustainability in mind.

Sustainable home building is not only good for the environment, but for the homeowner and larger community. Our goal is to build homes that are healthy, durable, affordable, and feature low utility bills.
As an affordable home developer, our budgets are smaller, but despite this our team is constantly looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment. Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco is moving to decarbonize our homes by eliminating natural gas and building 100% electric projects. The benefits of all electric homes include less pollution, increased safety, better public health, and lower utility bills for future owners. One of our latest developments, 6 townhomes at Geneva Village in Daly City, demonstrates how affordable homes, can also be sustainable.

Innovation

Geneva Village is Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco’s first 100% electric building. California remains one of the most reliant states in the nation on natural gas and gas infrastructure.  Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco is proud to be one of the first builders in the region to deliver 100% electric multifamily housing development. We always strive to keep utility costs down for future homeowners, taking into account the long-term environmental impacts of our construction, and maximizing the use and value of the solar panels we install, which are expected to offset 60-75% of the electrical costs for these homeowners.

Reduced Energy Consumption

In addition to the rooftop solar panels, there are numerous energy-saving features of these sustainable townhomes, including: advanced insulation packages to reduce heating and cooling demands, an Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system that introduces constant fresh air into the home to ensure a healthy indoor air quality, low-emitting finishes that reduce pollutants in the home, durable materials that reduce long term replacement costs, LED lighting package to lower energy bills, low-use water fixtures to help keep water utility bills low, and high performing windows.

The ERV system in each home will run constantly and provide ample tempered fresh air into each unit. This system exhausts air out of each bathroom continuously, while introducing fresh air into the common living space and each bedroom. In conjunction with the other energy efficiency measures, the ERV system ensures the homes need only nominal heating systems and no cooling system. Another win for saving energy consumption!

Community

The neighborhood provides future families with many amenities. The Geneva Avenue corridor provides access to commercial activity as well as easy transit options. Several bus lines near the project offer direct, rapid bus service to Downtown San Francisco, connections to commuter subway and regional rail options, plus access to San Francisco International Airport.

Geneva Village is close to many stores and businesses and has a walking score of 80 indicating that most errands can be accomplished on foot.
