A Great Day to Give: Giving Tuesday inspires support from long-time backers and new donors in a way few occasions can match

2 Minute Read

Straight after Thanksgiving there is a blur of commercial activity. First comes Black Friday. Hard on its heels comes Cyber Monday. And after that there’s Giving Tuesday.

Straight after Thanksgiving there is a blur of commercial activity. First comes Black Friday. Hard on its heels comes Cyber Monday. And after that there’s Giving Tuesday.

So just what is Giving Tuesday? How did it end up being held at a time of year when most people’s minds have turned to stealing a great deal online or instore? And why is it so important to organizations like Habitat Greater San Francisco and their work anyway?
Created in New York City in 2012, its organizers began with a simple idea: to create one day a year that encouraged people to do good. In the 10 years since its inauguration, Giving Tuesday has grown to the point where it galvanizes donors worldwide to give more than $3 billion.

It aspires to be an antidote to the post-Thanksgiving cascade of eating, drinking and shopping and primes us to unleash our natural instincts at this time of year to give with gratitude.

And, for Habitat Greater San Francisco, it couldn’t come at a better time of year.

“Habitat has given me the power that I didn’t even know I had in me, when I got those keys I was determined to work harder and to believe in myself.” Dina, Habitat GSF homeowner
Habitat’s work is powered by the generosity of our donors and the hard work of our volunteers. We simply couldn’t do what we do without them. And every dollar raised bolsters our mission to build affordable homes and extend the promise of homeownership to working families across our region. That’s why Giving Tuesday is so important.

It means helping more families like Dina's from Menlo Park. Working for 18 years at her local grocery store, mom Dina was a fixture of the community. But before moving into her Habitat home she struggled to find affordable housing. She and her children lived in one bedroom of a home shared with 14 other family members which was very difficult.

Having their own space to study had an immediate impact on the children. Her oldest son started receiving higher grades after only two months in the home. Today he, and her eldest daughter, are successfully attending college.

“Habitat has given me the power that I didn’t even know I had in me,” said Dina, “when I got those keys I was determined to work harder and to believe in myself.”

If giving is part of your holiday tradition, or if you’d like to make it a new tradition, Habitat would be honored to receive your donation this Giving Tuesday. And we promise that, with your support, we will never stop building affordable homes for local working families.
